Victory for Nigeria! Super Eagles Defeat Tahiti 6 to 1 at their 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup Opening Match in Brazil
Not even the excuse of fatigue resulting from long travels, would
have convinced fans,if the Super Eagles had failed to record an
outstanding victory over lowly rated Tahiti.
Nigeria kicked off their 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup campaign with
a 6-1 drubbing of the Tahiti, but there is an air of
dissatisfaction, following the misses that were recorded in the game.
The Super Eagles got their first goal of the game through Elderson
Echiejile’s long range shot, which took a double deflection en route goal
to put Nigeria 1-0 up in the first five minutes.
Nnamdi Oduamadi doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 10th minute, after a
nice interchanging of passes, going past the Tahitian defense with ease
and rifling the ball in the net for 2-0.
The AS Varese player got his brace for the game after being gifted
an opportunity by Tahiti’s keeper, Samin, and he guided the ball into the
net for 3-0.
Tahiti were not brushed outside as they made their presence known
and being buoyed by locals at the Stadium, who initially booed
Nigeria, forcing Enyeama to a couple of fine saves, controlling the tempo
in the last 10 minutes of the first half.
Nigeria had opportunities of putting Tahiti to the sword, but Sunday
Mba,Ahmed Musa and Anthony Ujah were all wasteful in front of
goal, failing to nail the golden opportunities they got.
Tahiti continued with their impressive showings towards the end of the first half and asked Nigeria’s defense line, questions.
Against all expectations, the Islander country scored a goal through
the corner kick, after Jonathan Tehau completely lost Efe Ambrose to head
the ball beyond Vincent Enyeama for their solitary goal in the 56th
minute, which sparked off wild celebrations from Tahiti.
Tahiti who have an estimated population of 178,000 people have
never scored an international goal in any FIFA competition, which
explained their ecstasy.
Tehau who made history for his country, soon turned villain, scoring
an own goal, after a nice work from Oduamadi, forced the player into an
error, and he turned the ball into his net.
Oduamadi got his deserved hat-trick from the game, connecting to a
square ball from Brown Ideye,to just tap in his third goal of the game.
But Ideye was culpable for an avalanche of misses, trying to round
the keeper, whenever played through on goal, and missing on all occasions.
Echiejile got his second of the game, shooting with his right leg
after a scramble,to give the Super Eagles a five-goal lead with just 10
minutes to go.
There was still time though for Ideye to register a couple of more
misses, but the score remained like that,as Tahiti made history, with the
only goal they’ve scored in a FIFA competition.
Now the Super Eagles will need to defeat Uruguay on Thursday,to book their passage to the next round of the competition against.
The question now is,if Nigeria can beat Tahiti by this
scoreline, despite all the flurry of chances they missed, the question now is what will Spain
and Uruguay now do,when they take on Tahiti?
Yesterday Monday 17th June 2013, the Nigerian football team won their first match against Tahiti at the on going 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
