TOKYO – A Japanese diplomat emerged from talks in Jordan on Monday with no signs of progress in securing the release of a freelance journalist held hostage by the extremist Islamic State group.

Japanese officials refused direct comment on the contents of the talks in Jordan, where Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister Yasuhide Nakayama is coordinating regional efforts to save hostage Kenji Goto.

The Islamic State group said in an online video on Jan. 20 that it had two Japanese hostages and would kill them within 72 hours unless Japan paid it $200 million -- the same amount Tokyo recently pledged in aid to nations fighting the militants.

An Egyptian court on Monday, June 23, 2014, convicted three Al-Jazeera journalists and sentenced them to seven years in prison on terrorism-related charges after a trial dismissed by rights groups as a politically motivated sham. The verdict brought a landslide of international condemnation and calls for Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi to intervene. El-Sissi, on Tuesday said he will not interfere in court rulings, sparking an international outcry. (AP/File)

World News [ deadly attack on Ukraine city of Mariupol violated international law, could be war crime ]

UNITED NATIONS – The U.N. political chief says deadly rocket attacks on the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol this weekend that "knowingly targeted civilians" violated international humanitarian law and could amount to war crimes.

Jeffrey Feltman told an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council Monday that monitors from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe who examined the craters reported that the rockets originated from territory controlled by pro-Russian rebels.

He said Saturday's attack on Mariupol — a strategic city that could provide a land corridor into Ukraine's Crimean peninsula which Russia annexed last March — destroyed buildings and hit a market killing dozens of people, including women and children, and injuring over 100. Other reports put the death toll at 30.

Feltman said the perpetrators must be brought to justice.

HONG KONG – The website of Malaysia Airlines was hacked Monday by a group that proclaimed support for the militant Islamic State group and also vowed to release data stolen from the site.

The airline's site was down for at least seven hours, replaced by a message from the hacker group, before the company brought it back online by mid-afternoon in Malaysia.
