News: Bhavna Singh out at News Day on eNCA

Cape Town – Midday eNCA (DStv 403) anchor Bhavna Singh is suddenly gone fromNews Day and the 24-hour South African TV news channel where she anchored alongside Andrew Barnes without a word from the channel.

eNCA which has remained silent didn’t announce Bhavna Singh’s departure, why she's gone or who is replacing the anchor who was let go from News Day.

The dedicated Singh co-anchored her last afternoon news shift alongside veteran anchor Andrew Barnes on Friday with eNCA which chose not to announce her departure to the press – or what is happening from Monday.

On Friday Sabido Investments, owner of e.tv and eNCA, warned in a statement of retrenchments as its looking at the possible closure of several divisions, including eNCA Africa.

At the beginning of this month e.tv moved its English prime time TV news bulletin from 19:00 to 20:30 with eNCA news anchor Pat Pillay who joined in 2004, who is also out.

An insider last week told Channel24 that "they have no money, so when contracts are up they are not renewing".

Patrick Conroy, the managing director of e.sat, told Channel24 on Monday in response to a media enquiry that "eNCA will not comment on the departure of Bhavna Singh. Her contract with our company ran its course and we wish her well in the future".

Asked about who, if anyone is replacing her, eNCA said Michelle Craig will partner with Andrew Barnes on News Day. "Michelle Craig has worked as a reporter and stand-in anchor for eNCA in the past".

Michelle Craig will start on News Day on eNCA on Tuesday 7 April.

The accomplished Bhavna Singh joined News Day as Andrew Barnes' in 2012 as the next co-anchor in the dynamic afternoon news slot between 13:00 and 16:00 on weekdays of which a portion is simulcast on e.tv. News Day is done from e.tv and eNCA's studio in Cape Town.

Singh who originally had late night and weekend slots on the eNews Channel, eNCA's former name, moved to News Day in May 2012 to become the new permanent co-anchor of News Day. Almost three years later she’s gone.

Bhavna Singh replaced Scheherazade Safla, who replaced Robyn Smith in the timeslot opposite Andrew Barnes.
