BENIN CITY- THE family of the former Chief of General Staff, Admiral Mike Akhigbe, Monday, described as untrue, online reports that the former number two man died in a London hospital.

Contrary to the reports of his alleged death, elder brother of the Admiral, Chief Joseph Alemon Akhigbe, said the news about his death was shocking to the family because ‘’ it is not true and it is really embarrassing to us’’.

According to him,‘’My brother is stabilizing in an American hospital and not even London as erroneously reported. As I speak to you now, the report in my opinion is pure speculation, the paper said he died in a London hospital but my brother is in an American hospital stabilizing. The wife, son-in-law and his daughter are with him. My immediate younger brother in Abuja who spoke to the wife in America confirmed to family members that the Admiral is stabilizing; the news of his death is totally untrue.

Also, younger brother of the Admiral, Mr Aselenmen Akhigbe, declared that the report is untrue. He said ‘’ I spoke with him this early morning at about 5am, that is why we are surprise with such an erroneous report. It is not good for people to report the death of persons when such is not the case’’.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Police said they arrested pop music star Chris Brown early Sunday and charged him with felony assault after a violent altercation outside a downtown Washington hotel.

Police spokesman Anthony Clay told AFP that Brown was arrested “around 4:25 this morning (0825 GMT) in front of the W Hotel,” a chic establishment near the White House.

Brown, along with a male companion, got into an altercation with a third man, and the incident became violent, according to police.

Brown, 24, and his companion “were arrested and charged with a felony assault. A victim was taken to the hospital and treated for his injuries,” the police spokesman said, adding that the beating victim “had injuries to his face.”

“They are still in our custody,” Clay said of the pop star and his friend, who was described by US media as the singer’s bodyguard.

Brown is the ex-boyfriend of pop singer Rihanna, with whom he has had a tempestuous on-again, off-again relationship.

He was arrested in February 2009 after getting involved in a physical confrontation with Rihanna that left her with a bruised and battered face.

He was required, after pleading guilty in court to the assault, to take part in domestic violence counseling and sentenced to five years’ probation and community service

Pirates have seized two US sailors from an oil supply ship off the coast of Nigeria, officials say.

The captain and chief engineer of the US-flagged C-Retriever were taken on Wednesday by armed men who stormed the boat, they said.

US officials said it was not a terrorist act, but were concerned about the rise in piracy off West Africa.

In kidnaps in the region, crew members are normally freed unharmed after any oil on board the ships is stolen.

US State Department Deputy Spokeswoman Marie Harf Wednesday's incident was being treated as "an act of piracy" rather than terrorism.

Gunmen attacked the C Retriever, an oil supply vessel, near the coastal town of Brass in Nigeria's oil rich Bayelsa State.

The chief engineer and the captain, both American citizens, were kidnapped. The vessel and 11 other members of the crew were reportedly released.

'Lucrative crime'

White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters: "We are concerned by the disturbing increase in the incidence of maritime crime, including incidents of piracy off the coast of West Africa, specifically in the Gulf of Guinea."


The International Maritime Bureau has recorded more than 40 attacks in the area this year with 132 crew taken hostage. The gangs usually target the oil vessels to steal the cargo.

"Pirate networks in the Gulf of Guinea are focusing on product theft from tankers and this relatively new type of crime has evolved into a unique and highly lucrative form of maritime crime," said the Risk Intelligence security firm, in its October report.

It is estimated that oil product worth approximately $100m (approximately £62m) has been stolen since 2010.

In recent months there have been numerous kidnappings of foreign oil workers and wealthy Nigerians, especially in the oil-producing Niger Delta region.

They have often been held until a ransom payment is made.
